Home Remedies for Soothing Chickenpox – featuring Turmeric!

My knowledge of the benefits of turmeric has come from years of observing the practices of the people from my culture and the practices and belief arising out of Ayurveda, based on a range of remedies and inherited over hundreds of years. My mission is to share with you what I have learnt from my culture in the hope that it will promote more consumer driven behaviour towards choosing natural products over chemically enhanced, modified and potentially environmentally unfriendly products. Some tried and tested practices remain to achieve mainstream acceptance in the west however turmeric remains to be natures gold that that is slowly emerging in acceptance from the West. Before western science validated turmeric’s many properties, Indians were using turmeric for many skin problems and infections. One of the most popular home remedy using turmeric is in the treatment to sooth and relieve the symptoms of chickenpox. Here are some natural homemade remedies for soothing if you suffer from chickenpox:

1️⃣ Turmeric: sooth the itchiness of the skin by soaking in a lukewarm turmeric bath. Add 1 cup of oatmeal flour to sooth the skin, and 1 cup of wild turmeric powder to reduce the inflammation. Sit in the bath for 10-15 minutes and be sure to dry with a soft, cotton muslin cloth (avoiding your regular towel as it may scratch and further aggravate the skin). Turmeric also assists and minimising scars and marks.

2️⃣ Indian lilac or Neem: neem helps to dry out the blisters. Obtain ground neem powder and make a paste with water and apply to the spots. You can obtain neem powder from certain Indian grocery stores. (This treatment may not be suitable for young children)

3️⃣ Baking soda: Baking soda can help control the itching caused by chickenpox.

Stir one-half tablespoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Use a soft muslin cloth to put the solution on the affected parts of the body and allow it to dry.  

4️⃣ Avoid greasy, spicy or oily foods - liver function is poor during this infections, spicy or oily food will stress out the liver.
